Winter/ Spring 2019 THE ATLANTIC
HJA Design helped put together the design and planning team for this 22 acre remote oceanfront campus located in St. Lucie County, Florida which will be home to one of the largest and most comprehensive addiction treatment facilities in the United States. The tranquil and natural setting will be a major part of the therapy for clients struggling from chemical dependencies and other addictions. The Atlantic features four 4-story buildings designed by the award winning architectural firm of GS4 Studios and is being developed by the international company, The Index Group. The Atlantic’s campus- like design incorporates a contemporary architectural theme and tropical landscape design with the natural character of the site and surrounding area to create a resort atmosphere changing the nature of treatment for it’s clients and their families.
The Design Studio is designing one of the first true “agri- communities” (agrihoods) in Florida and one of only a handful in the southeast U.S. Winemiller Farm is a 2,000 acre site on the edge of Martin County’s urban boundary with over 900 acres in active farming and nearly three miles along the St. Lucie/ Okeechobee Waterway. Agricultural centered and food- to-table themed residential and mixed- use communities are appearing around the country and to a degree are replacing golf course communities and typical subdivisions as a sustainable and healthy alternative to suburban sprawl and land consumption. The rural village of the project will include 700 homes of various sizes and prices site planned utilizing many traditional neighborhood design principles on just over 300 acres along the waterway, while 800 acres of the present- day farm will be preserved and enhanced. A village center and community farm will provide for small gatherings and larger outdoor events and over 300 acres of native habitat is being preserved and incorporated into the communities 9 miles of trails. Of great significance to the region, which has struggled to improve the St. Lucie and Indian River’s water quality, Hog Creek which bisects the site and empties nearly 5,000 acres of phosphorus and nitrogen rich small farm and ranch land into the St. Lucie canal, will be rerouted and redesigned to capture and clean this water before it is sent to tide.
Located on one of the last larger redevelopment sites in the fast evolving City of West Palm Beach this former low- rise apartment site will be transformed into a 400 unit luxury apartment complex for the many millenials moving to this exciting city. Located on the shores of the three hundred acre Clear Lake just outside of downtown the Design Studio team of Todd Troxell and GS-4 Architects envisioned a contemporary apartment complex that captures a wave design in the ten- story buildings as well as the outdoor pool and recreation areas along the lake front.
Martin County recently selected the HJA Design Studio to redesign the 36- hole Martin County Public Golf Course. HJA teamed with Sanford Golf Design, Stephen Boruff Architects, Bowman Consulting and the National Golf Foundation and was selected over six other teams. The original 9-hole course was built in 1925 by Hugh Willoughby famed explorer. The County's and our team's objective is to create a long range master plan that will produce a sustainable golf facility that provides a quality yet affordable golf experience for visitors and residents alike. Building community consensus on the future of the facility included a public outreach program including visioning workshops to evaluate three alternative scenarios. Martin County's Parks and Recreation Director, Kevin Abatte also focused on creating an economic model that would allow the course to be upgraded and maintained or improved for years to come. Two community-wide workshop meetings have been held as well as numerous meetings with the Golf Course Advisory Committee which was established by the board of County Commissioners.
Okeechobee County Commissioners recently approved the 850 acre Sundance Trails Eco-Resort which is the first newly planned Resort Activity Center (RESAC) approved in County history. The ranch, which was formerly developed as a rural ranchette large lot community is being redeveloped into a clustered mixed use community centered around outdoor music and theatrical events and allowing a wide range of activities. The abundant native pine flatwoods will be preserved as a backdrop for camping, hiking, swimming, biking and general relaxation. Sundance, under another name will host its first major three-day music festival in March of 2016. More details to follow….
Willoughby Golf Club was built in the late 1980s in Stuart, Florida and included Arthur Hill's designed golf course and an 18,000 square-foot clubhouse with a community pool, a small grill and bathrooms and five tennis courts. HJA was asked to conceptualize a new design for the clubhouse complex that would encourage more outdoor activities and attract new members with families. The existing pool and outdoor areas between the clubhouse and golf course were evaluated to determine how to best maximize outdoor activities for seasonal use by the members. . HJA created a conceptual master plan which is currently under construction and includes an expansion of the formal dining area to create an informal dining terrace between the pool and the clubhouse and two new outdoor covered buildings including a pool bar between the pool and the 18th green and a new dining terrace known as "The Point" just outside of the main dining room.
